Zombie…music? Cool!

20120419-104114.jpg

There’s all kinds of music out there. I like all kinds- and I’m sure you do too. It probably depends on beat, rhythm, lyrics, and the effect it has on you– otherwise why like music at all, right?

When I heard there was a genre of music that was “Steampunk” inspired – I was interested, and had to check it out on Youtube. I ran across Abney Park— a wise choice (my favorites are “Airship Pirates” and “Sleep Isabella“).

When I heard that there is ZOMBIE music, that doesn’t just have the word “zombie” in the songs, I had to find out what that was all about, too. As a writer, sometimes I sit in front of my computer searching for music to inspire certain tones that I want my scenes to convey.

I heard about Aaron Stoquert and I just needed to know what “zombie music” sounded like. I figured I’d hear a lot of heavy metal and moaning, to be quite honest. So, I was really surprised when I heard this crooning voice and this easy beat coming through my iPhone and before I knew it, I was really digging it.

My interest is not just because it’s deemed “zombie music”- although, obviously, I do enjoy the zombie genre and that interest lead me to the artist, but it was also one of those things that just “hit me” as enjoyable.

Aaron writes and performs his songs from what a zombie might think or feel, which I think is pretty interesting but I also kind of feel like some of the lyrics could convey what a person might feel in a “zombie state of being” after something like a bad break up, too. That was my feeling, anyway, while listening to some of the songs.

Now, it isn’t and won’t be for “everyone”, certainly. Not any more than Abney Park might be for some people- but I am hoping there will be a trend of zombie genre inspired music (like there has been with Steampunk genre music) to see what can be done with it from here.

Here’s a Youtube video and a sample of Aaron’s work, if you’re curious too:

You can find a CD or MP3 download here (or on iTunes):

“Ripper”

There is excellent news to report, for those who like to read stories that I’ve written.

My dark, horror, short story “Ripper” was accepted to be published by Sirens Call Publication’s April edition, eZine.

Not only am I excited to be a part of the edition, I’m also loving the fact that the figure on the cover-art has green eyes, just like I do. A complete chance happening but I do love the detail none-the-less 🙂

I’ll have information on the release date and where to purchase the online magazine copy on a later update but for now…

Check out that cover- each month has the same beauty, with different eye colors (so far).

Before Plan 9 – news

I’m excited to have received my author contributor’s copy of “Before Plan 9: Plans 1-8 from Outer Space” yesterday. Fans of Ed Wood’s old classic,”Plan 9 from Outer Space” will really get a kick out of this but I think the mash up of aliens playing around with (alternate) human history could be entertaining for anyone interested.

BAMCon in the news

Thanks to Jenn Smith at the Berkshire Eagle, the BAMCon event made the front page newspaper.

20120412-091156.jpg

In other fun news, I have personally gone from a fan of BAMCon coming to my area in general, to a woman who will be actually a part of the Zombie panel that the Zombie Action Committee will be presenting to attendee’s. 🙂 We will be discussing well…zombies. 🙂

Hope to see you there- at my first Con appearance about 2 subjects I love. Anime/Manga and zombies! How could it get better? 🙂

Cryptic in the Library

Awesome news for Cryptic.

As you can well imagine, I’ve been a reader far longer than I’ve been a writer. When I wasn’t buying books, I was borrowing them from the library whenever possible. Stacks to a time, sometimes (I’ve always been a fast reader. Too bad I don’t write as quickly as I read).

I’m happy to report that today The Berkshire Athenaeum – accepted my book “Cryptic” for future public library distribution. It’s exciting news, because…once? I sat there reading the books by other people- and now, I have one of mine- with my own name on it- there for others to read.

If you go over by that way, don’t forget to ask for it and check it out of the library when it’s added to the rotation. If you’re no where near here, don’t forget – it’s also available to order from Barnes & Noble and Amazon, too 🙂

Ah. Today is a good day 🙂

I like Anime & Manga too. Do you?

I found out some really awesome news today that I’m excited for and I wanted to share it with you.

As you guys know, I’m pretty into horror monsters- but I am into some Anime/Manga as well. The world of Anime was introduced to me years ago by one of my oldest friends, Matthew Williamson, who showed me Bubblegum Crisis Tokyo 2040. From then on, I’ve enjoyed Evangelion, Appleseed, Appleseed- ExMachina, Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, Highschool of the Dead, Full Metal Alchemist, Karas, Karas the Prophecy, Chobits, Spirited Away and many more that I can’t remember currently. Admittedly, there are many, many greats that I have yet to see- but I still have my favorites from what I’ve seen so far.

Berkshire Anime Club and MediaCrash founder Jon Wynn and the amazing club members are hosting the Berkshire Anime & Manga Convention at the Crowne Plaza in Pittsfield, MA. They ran a Kickstarter program and donation site to raise funds to help sponsor the event- but other great public sponsors like Hot Harry’s, Brix Wine Bar, Genke Life Magazine, and How to Save the World Comic helped push the club over the top to be able to present the event here in the heart of the Berkshires.

Crowne Plaza Hotel is hosting the event on Friday, May 4th- from 10AM until Sunday. Pre-order tickets to the 3 day event are 25.00  – with varying costs for groups, 1 day passes, and Crowne Plaza may still have rooms available at a discounted price if you are attending BAM-Con from out of town (call and check before rooms are snapped up! There are other great close hotels too, if the hotel is booked.)

For information and pre-order tickets- visit BAM-Con’s website: http://www.bam-con.com/

I’m planning to attend, too and take lots of pictures. This is the first annual event for BAM-Con- and hopes to build on itself as the years pass. Let’s show the Con, that the Pittsfield MA area on the East Coast can throw a great time! 🙂

The Wonderful world of ‘Cryptic’

I have received some wonderful reviews of Cryptic since its launch. I am so thrilled that it’s largely so well received.

“I eagerly await the next installment – or indeed anything that drips from the pen of Ms Chaney.” – Adam Millard, author of Dead Cells and Dead West.

“The book gripped me and refused to relinquish its grasp until the final sentence.” – Dane Grannon, author of Lucky Streak

“I have read débuts from other writers and put the book down within five pages…In this case we witness a début into greatness. Very few writer’s have such talent as D.A. Chaney.” – R.D. Tuen, author of short story “Suicide Solution” in the Wake Up Dead anthology.

“Ms. Chaney eschews the modern day zombie story and takes you back to a time where there were not gun stores in every corner.” – Todd Brown, author of the Zomblog series, Dead-the Ugly Beginning series, Dakota, and more.

“Wish It Had Been Longer” – Ursula K. Raphael, reviewer and author of The Survivor

Tonight, I received an unexpected and very thrilling review by Chantal Boudreau – another successful and prolific author of titles such as “Fervor,” “Elevation”, “Insurance”, “Magic University”, and more than a dozen short story collections -some of which we have shared together as well like Wake the Witch (a charity anthology), Hell Hath No Fury (an all female zombie collaboration anthology), and non-fiction Zombie Writing! collection.

I’m totally buzzing with happiness that she enjoyed it. “DA is a natural writer”.

See her full review and opinion here:

You can find a copy of Cryptic in paperback or Kindle form below if you’d like to check it out. I’m hoping you will and that you’ll let me know if you enjoyed it too 🙂 :

If you’re looking for new books to read- check out the very fine authors who took the time to not only read my novella- but kind enough to leave reviews on it. I know they will appreciate it, as much as I do. 🙂

Sweet Sunday plans

I’m really looking forward to The Writers Coffeehouse gathering on Sunday, March 11th in PA. (weather permitting) I’m anxious to meet Jonathan Maberry while I’m there 🙂

I’m hoping to catch a bit of the Philadelphia Flower Show while I’m in town that day too. It’ll make for a fun filled packed day.

I’ll post some pictures!
